The Spirit Gate stood upon the Celestial Plain.
No one knew, nor understood how it had come to be there. The other Brush Gods gazed solemnly upon it, knowledge of what it could mean resonated within them. Waka danced around it, placed wards on it, tried to determine its meaning, its true purpose. For anyone that crossed through a Spirit Gate asked for great misfortune.
Amaterasu had done so before: crossed through a Spirit Gate. Once to save her younger self from the Twin Owl Demons Lechtu and Necktu. Another time, to save her older self from Orochi. Yes, being a god was complicated business. She didn't much understand it herself. But what she did understand was naps. So as Waka fretted, and the Gods waited, Amaterasu took a nap under the warm sun of the Heavens.
And when Waka finally went home to sleep, and the Brush Gods followed, Amaterasu awoke once more. Giving a long stretch, she yawned widely and turned her attention back toward the Spirit Gate.
No, she did not understand the Spirit Gate or its necessity. But she did understand that whenever it appeared, a grave event was about to occur. She stood and approached it, sniffing the air curiously where it sat upon the field. The Moonlight made it glow eerily. It beckoned her to it like a siren.
She turned and looked behind her at where Waka was surely home, going through charts and ancient scripts when he should be sleeping. She did hope he would forgive her for not saying goodbye. But adventure awaited no immortal in her experience.
'Leap before you think.' The thought came to her, making her maw transform to a roguish smile. Without much more thought, the Sun Goddess bound forward into the Spirit Gate with great resolve.
There was white light, then grass replaced the rough hewn of stone. The smell of lilacs and lilies disappeared to food and humans... and non-humans. It was disconcerting, and Amaterasu was not quite sure where to look first. There was so much to listen to, to smell, to eat! For truly these new senses meant this was not Nippon, the mortal world, as she had expected it to be. Nor was it the Celestial Plain. But a new world entirely.
The sound of fighting drew her senses.... misfortune indeed! A pup stood not far from her, surrounded by creatures with a dark aura. Distaste contorted her features at the sight: only beings of pure evil would harm so young a creature. When one of the dark creatures raised its strangely-shaped shaft, ready to strike, Amaterasu drew a black line across it with her mind's eye. The Slash Technique caused the creature to split in half mid-jump, and disappear into blackness.
With the creature's attention suddenly occupied, Amaterasu rushed forward, jumping into the circle where the pup was engaged in battle. Crouching low, she began to growl loudly at the creatures, the pup at her side. 'Wretched creatures! Feel the sting of my paw!' She snarled in her mind, an actual loud snarl emanating out of her mouth as she prepared for battle.
