Akuma
50s+ | MALE | HUMAN |
HEART OF DARKNESS | STREET FIGHTER | CANON |
appearance
Akuma is a man of just above average height, at 5' 10", but with a sturdy frame of corded muscle that heralds his harsh training and brutal strength. A lifetime of training, fighting and traveling in the outdoors has beaten his already dark olive skin into a dark, leathery tone, and etched deep creases into his face and hands. His hair, often kept tied simply over his head to keep it out of his face, is a dark, jet black color, predominately showing a fiery red sheen in even the dimmest of light, and just beginning to find itself shot through with strands of gray, hinting at his advancing age, and his eyes share the bright red sheen of his hair, and at times often seem to glow in an eerie fashion. Of curious note is that Akuma's teeth are sharp and pointed, shown clearly when he bares them in battle or smiles -- a very rare thing, but not unheard of.
Akuma's preferred garb is simple, leaning toward function and tradition than anything else. A dark-colored martial arts gi, the edges of which are in varying states of fray from long years of abuse in combat and weather covers his body, with the kanji 天 -- ten, or "heaven", in stark crimson on his back. Around his neck Akuma wears the prayer beads of his former master, Goutetsu, with the center bead also sharing the 天 kanji engraved on its surface. Around his fists Akuma wears 'gloves' formed of coiled ropes, and has a rope belt tied about his waist -- these are often removed when he deigns to stop holding back against a worthy foe. He often goes barefoot, but from time to time wears simple brown sandals.
personality
♥ Emotionally Sturdy -- Akuma is cold and seemingly emotionally dead, rarely showing any outward displays of emotion aside from short, periodic bursts of anger or amusement. While this could be called a bad thing, it is a mark of his strong willpower, not allowing himself to succumb to the violent, bloodthirsty nature that often takes hold of users of the Satsui no Hado while still using the art to its full extent. His emotions are not dead or forgotten, merely subdued and under an iron rein of control and focus, making it truly difficult to use them against him.
♥ Honorable -- Akuma is a warrior above all else. He does not fight for glory or personal gain, merely to test and improve his own skills, and defeat powerful foes in the process. He will always strive for an even bout, often going so far as to back out of a fight if the other party cannot fight at their best due to injury or other interference.
♥ Sense of Morality -- While Akuma may refer to himself as "evil incarnate" and a "denizen of hrll" freely, he is not without his own morals, and has openly acknowledged others as being more evil than himself, or a "worse kind" of evil, and has stood on the side of those fighting for "justice" to put down such beings. While he is far from a hero, and has done many terrible things, Akuma himself openly acknowledges these actions, but refuses to hide from them, and continues to stand against his own definition of "true" evil as it becomes necessary.
♥ Principles -- Akuma is a man of strong principles, and chief among them is his belief in self-worth, and relying on one's own strength to overcome obstacles. He despises those who resort to other means of obtaining power aside from their own fists and spirit, especially the manipulation of others, and perceives it as a direct lack of that which they seek. And while his methods may be questionable and undeniably harsh, Akuma will push anyone who shows promise toward discovering their own self-worth and inner strength, by any means necessary.
♥ Some Measure of Heart -- While Akuma is an incredibly cold and ruthless man, and takes affronts and interruptions to his training incredibly seriously, he is not yet entirely without heart, retaining some small shreds of humanity. He has made at least one friend even after throwing away his humanity, and aided a child lost in the forest find his way back to his home, hinting that despite being "evil incarnate" Akuma is not entirely a bad person at heart.
♡ Interruptions -- Akuma is dedicated to his training and his personal quests, and he does not take kindly to being interrupted from his tasks, and will respond brutally to anyone who interrupts his training or meditations, often with a fierce spike of anger.
♡ Never Say Die -- Part of Akuma's quest to find powerful warriors is to find someone capable of defeating -- and indeed, killing him at his full strength, in an even fight. To that end, Akuma has adopted the mentality to never retreat from a fight, even if it should be one he is losing.
♡ Unrelenting -- Akuma could perhaps be called....single-minded in his pursuits. He is singularly focused on his goal of finding and conquering worthy foes, and can often seem obstinate, aloof, or downright clueless and heartless to outside observers as a result. It makes him hard to slow down, sure, but it also makes him just a little...predictable, for anyone with keen enough observational skills.
♡ Turning Away -- Akuma despises all those who turn away from their own power for any reason, or for turning away from those things they fear. Turning away from one's inner darkness, rather than facing it and overcoming or taking its power for your own -- as Akuma himself did with the Satsui no Hadou, and which Gouken prevented Ryu from doing -- is but one example. To individuals who take this path, Akuma has no mercy and will become even more cold and almost vengeful toward, seeking to push them to their breaking point to accept that which they have turned away from.
history
See here. Taken after the events of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.
Wandering the earth to continue his training, Akuma sensed a strange disturbance in the world -- a stirring of darkness reminiscent of the evil power of the Satsui no Hado. Leaving at once to investigate it, he came across an entirely new type of darkness, brimming with power and wholly alien to his understanding. A chill went down his spine at the prospect of the powerful warriors that might be drawn to this darkness, and without a second thought plunged into the swirling portal of darkness to see what fate had in store for him.
Abilities
• Ansatsuken -- Akuma is a superb martial artist, feared and respected as much for his raw strength as for his skills. He has mastered the unnamed Ansatsuken -- "Assassination Fist" -- art passed down from his master, and utilizes it to deadly effect, utilizing a mixture of Karate, Judo and Kempo elements to devastating effect. Akuma's usage of the style is swift and deadly, focusing on overwhelming foes with pure offense and leaving little time for counter-attacks.
• Satsui no Hado -- The cause for Akuma's somewhat demonic attributes, the Satsui no Hado is a dark form of ki rooted in the dark aspects of human nature. Embracing it can make users of it very powerful, but can warp them irreversibly. Having embraced the Satsui no Hado fully, Akuma has indeed gained tremendous power, and has been stripped of his compassion and attachment to others, seeking only strong opponents to fight and kill, guaranteeing him a warrior's death. By tapping into the power of the Satsui no Hado, Akuma's body is sometimes enshrouded by a glowing aura of purple energy, dancing like flames, and the glow in his eyes grows more pronounced, and his power increases greatly. The dense aura of dark ki created when channeling the Satsui no Hado is so powerful it can deflect small attacks and projectiles all on its own.
When fighting a worthy foe, Akuma may choose to release the full power of the Satsui no Hado. Doing so, his skin becomes much darker in tone, his eyes glow much deeper, brighter red, his hair turns a stark white, and his gi turns a dark shade of purple, turning him into "Shin Akuma". In this form, Akuma is much more powerful and agile, and can utilize the full extent of his combat abilities, though the form does erode his will and energy at an alarming rate, reserving its use for only the most worthy of opponents.
• Great Strength -- Akuma is not only a great warrior because of his skills, but because of his raw power. Even when holding back his strength, he is capable of easily shattering stone and denting metal plating with his blows. He can effortlessly knock a grown man off his feet with a single punch, and a solid kick can send a man flying dozens of feet through the air. When using his full strength, Akuma is capable of causing volcanic eruptions with a single punch, and can destroy an asteroid with a single blow.
• Highly Agile -- Matching his great strength, Akuma is a highly agile combatant, capable of performing various athletic and acrobatic feats, including combat rolls, flips, and leaping nearly a dozen feet through the air, and he can roll with blows in the event he is knocked down to regain his footing quickly.
• Great Endurance -- Akuma has great experience in fighting, and keeping his own pace, with a large amount of stamina and staying power to keep fighting for as long as he needs to, as well as enduring a great deal of pain without hindrance. He is able to remain underwater on the ocean floor and under extreme pressure for prolonged periods of time seemingly without ill effect. He won't need to quite a fight for any reason aside from it ending or being too injured to continue.
• Techniques -- Given his mastery of the combat style he has adopted, it is no surprise Akuma has a myriad of techniques at his disposal to implement in combat, and a wide array of differing variations of them to mix up and keep his foe guessing as to how he might next leap into the fray.
{Spoiler}{Spoiler: Click to Show}Gohadoken -- Akuma's variant of the Hadoken technique. The Gohadoken is a ball of energy launched from Akuma's hands, looking visually similar to a ball of purple flames. It carries tremendous force, capable of knocking even a trained fighter off their feet with its impact. It travels at a fairly swift pace, and reaches approximately twenty meters before fading.
Zanku Hadoken -- A variation of the Gohadoken employed in midair, enabling Akuma to throw the blast at a downward angle, using the kickback from it to slow his descent or push him a few feet in one direction. When using his full power as Shin Akuma, he can throw two projectiles, one from each hand, simultaneously.
Shakunetsu Hadoken -- Requiring a brief charge to execute, Akuma's body glows red before he launches a ball of intense flames. Its speed and range are virtually identical to the Gohadoken, but it hits multiple times -- its initial impact, the detonation of the restrained energy and the wash of flames -- providing much more damage potential, but requiring a brief moment to recover afterwards before Akuma can continue his assault.
Messatsu Gou Hadou -- An extremely powerful variant of the Hadoken technique and one of Akuma's more powerful techniques, requiring a charge of several seconds before releasing, it creates a large ball of energy from which a large beam of purple energy is fired, capable of inflicting great damage across its entire path.
Tenma Gou Zankuu -- An aerial technique requiring a charge of several seconds, and one of Akuma's most powerful techniques, while airborne, he fires a barrage of Zanku Hadokens toward his foe. The barrage is so intense that it can actually completely stop his descent through the air, and even push him back upward, or propel him strongly in a given direction.
Goshoryuken -- Akuma's variant of the Shoryuken technique. Surrounding his fist in purple flames, Akuma performs a leaping uppercut punch, striking his foe in the chest and then the chin, launching them airborne and striking them with the flying uppercut. The attack packs a great deal of power behind it, and the energy around his fist can burn and even slice and tear at his opponent.
Ultimate Throw -- A counter-attack technique. Akuma strikes a taunting pose, beckoning his foe to attack him. If they fall for the bait, he intercepts their attack and launches a powerful Goshoryuken, covered in black flames that burns his foe in addition to knocking them flying.
Messatsu-Goshoryu -- Charging briefly, Akuma strikes his foe in the chest and chin as in his Goshoryuken, launching them into the air, then spins about to throw a second uppercut covered in purple flames, further 'juggling' his opponent in the air and launching them higher, before leaping into a powerful spinning uppercut with explosive force, releasing a tower of spinning purple flames to damage his opponent and send them flying.
Tatsumaki Zabkuukyaku -- Akuma's variant of the Tatsumaki technique. He launches into a powerful spiraling kick, spinning like a tornado and surrounded by lightning, flying several meters forward in a straight line. The speed of his spinning can easily land multiple hits in an unwary enemy, and can even launch foes into the air to leave them open for followup attacks.
Messatsu Gourasen -- Akuma launches into a powerful spinning kick surrounded by lightning, creating a powerful vacuum to draw foes in. He rises several meters into the air, before finishing with a spinning kick of explosive power to launch his foe brutally away from him.
Tenshou Kaireki Jin -- Easily one of Akuma's most powerful techniques, it first begins with him turning away from his opponent, as if disregarding their presence, before launching a powerful, high roundhouse kick with thunderous force, knocking them flying skyward. He then spins into an extremely powerful Tatsumaki kick, surrounding himself with a whirlwind, and launches himself at his airborne opponent, striking them with a devastating kick. A massive image of the 天 kanji emblazoned on his back appears, forming a 'wall' his opponent is pinned to. With a gleam of his eyes and a taunt to his foe, Akuma increases the force behind his blow and shatters the kanji, forcing his foe through it and hurling them to the ground with tremendous force. Akuma has completely obliterated the remains of a sunken ocean liner with this technique, demonstrating its tremendous power.
Hyakkishu -- A simple technique wherein Akuma performs a powerful leap, curling into a swift flip in the air to avoid attacks, functioning very much like an Aerial Dodge maneuver. It can be followed up by a number of tricks against an unwary foe.
-- Hyakki Gozan -- After performing the Hyakkishu, Akuma launches a crushing sliding kick at his opponent to trip them up.
-- Hyakki Gosho -- Coming out of his flip, Akuma brings down an open palm slam at his opponent's head covered in purple flames, intending to smash them into the ground with great force.
-- Hyakki Gosen -- Coming out of his flip, Akuma brings one leg down on a foe in a fierce ax kick, landing on his back himself but hitting with tremendous force.
-- Hyakki Gojin -- Carrying through with the momentum of his flip, Akuma comes down with a flying kick covered in purple flames, intended to knock his foe down.
-- Hyakki Gosai -- Coming out of his flip, Akuma grabs his foe by the shoulders and flips forward, landing behind them and throwing them forward.
-- Hyakki Gotsui -- If his opponent is also in the air, Akuma will emerge from his flip and grab onto his opponent's head, driving them toward the ground in a spinning pile driver.
Zenpou Tenshin -- A combat rolling and dodging maneuver, virtually identical to a Dodge Roll maneuver.
Ashura Senku -- Widening his stance, Akuma glows red for a brief moment before he lifts one leg up in a defensive stance and glides in a straight line for up to several meters at a high speed, eyes glowing and seeming to flicker insubstantially. During the movement, Akuma can phase through obstacles and attacks as if he were teleporting.
Kongou Kokuretsuzan -- Perhaps Akuma's most powerful technique by conventional terms, it begins with him holding one hand overhead, gathering energy as a red aura envelops his body and purple energy gathers in his fist. He then clenches his fist and brings it down to the earth in a powerful punch, producing a powerful tremor in the ground and a bolt of purple lightning to strike as his fist connects before producing an explosion of energy for several meters around him and a powerful shockwave in all directions. At its full power, this move was capable of shattering the island Akuma trained on into pieces, and even splitting Ayers Rock in half, heralding its devastating power.
Shun Goku Satsu -- Akuma adopts an aggressive stance, Akuma taunts his opponent before rushing toward them with an Ashura Senku and aiming to grapple them. If he succeeds he performs a devastatingly powerful punch surrounded by crimson energy, bombarding his foe with a series of sixteen explosions of energy that attack their soul, inflicting monstrous damage, and causing the 天 kanji emblazoned on his back to glow ominously in the sky above. (Alternately, when transformed into Shin Akuma, the kanji 神人 --"Godlike person" -- appears instead.) For all its power, this technique is useless on beings without souls or hearts, and has lessened effects on those without large amounts of darkness or evil in their heart.
Shin Shun Goku Satsu -- Similar to the Shun Goku Satsu, but only usable in dire straits or when fighting a foe that needs to be truly vanquishes. When grabbing his opponent, the kanji 一瞬千撃 appear in fiery writing above Akuma's shoulders, literally meaning "One instant, thousand strikes", and the ensuing barrage as Akuma assaults his opponent is appropriately more brutal than the regular variation, inflicting much more damage, but remaining just as useless as the regular variation against those without a soul or great evil to destroy.
Misogi -- Akuma teleports into the air directly over his opponent with a homing variant of the Ashura Senku and comes crashing down toward his foe with a devastating knife-hand karate chop. If he connects with the blow, he smashes his stunned foe into the ground with massive force, producing a series of cracks in the earth which form his signature 天 kanji. If he misses, he strikes the earth and produces an explosion of energy similar to his Kongo Kokuretsuzan, but on a smaller scale.

Weaknesses
○ Pure Offense -- Akuma is a fighter focused purely on offense, dominating an opponent and not giving them a chance to counter attack. As a result, he lacks in durability to an alarming degree compared to what might be expected of a fighter of his strength.
○ Satsui no Hado -- While Akuma does have a remarkable degree of control over the dark forces of the Satsui no Hado, he has not truly overcome the risks of falling completely under its dark influence, succumbing to a mindless berserker rage and becoming a grave danger to himself, as well as everything else.
○ Light -- After making use of the full, dark power of the Satsui no Hado, Akuma has become steeped and bathed in darkness. In his own world this only served to make his presence easily distinguishable by others who knew of the Satsui no Hado, but with the elements taking on a very real role here, it serves as a weak point making him much more vulnerable to the powers of light, taking much more damage from attacks with a strong Light or good attunement.
○ Seeking the Strong -- Akuma's philosophy of seeking out strong warriors is not a way that is good for making friends or even allies. He is cold and distant, and prefers to let his fists do the talking for him, often instigating fights for the sole purpose of fighting, most often resulting in making more enemies than anything else.
○ Cold -- Akuma is cold and derisive, often outright putting down those around him and mocking their perceived 'skills' until they have been proven to him. The only time he shows a modicum of respect to others is when he acknowledges them as a worthy foe or that their skills or determination are admirable enough, again earning him no points for civility or for making allies.
