appearance
Belts: the character. Joking aside, Ragna sports snowy white hair that was once blonde, the result of a vampire saving his life when he was young. His skin is light and he has heterochromia iridum, meaning his eyes are different colours (red and green) with the right eye being blood red. His coat is also red, and admittedly is covered in belts and metal that hang down from it. Under his coat, he wears a black zipped-up outfit that is rather loose. Ragna's trousers are black and baggy, hanging off him even more than the metal does. His boots are steel-toe-capped, and quite heavy. Underneath, Ragna is actually well-built, with muscles that are visible, but not overly exaggerated.
personality
♥ Kind - Ragna is actually rather kind, though he can easily come off as anything but. He doesn't like to see people suffer, and prefers to avoid unnecessary engagements if he can. If he can step in to save someone from something without any cost to himself, he will. Sometimes, he'll step in even if it is at a cost to himself.
♥ Relentless - Ragna has a lot of willpower, and if he sets his sights on something, he will almost always see it through to the bitter, painful end. He doesn't like giving up.
♥ Protective - Despite his initial roughness, Ragna is a very protective person and will do what he can to protect people he befriends, even if it takes him a while to warm up to them. If you become someone that he even starts to care a little bit about, he will fight tooth and nail to get you out of harm's way.
♡ Temper - Ragna has a short fuse, and if you press him in the wrong way, he can flip out at you. If he gets really, legitimately angry, you can expect threats of violence.
♡ Aggressive - As a person who's used to having the largest bounty on record on his head, Ragna is not the most open of individuals and can be rather aggressive sometimes. This makes it difficult for him to make friends, even though he's not necessarily that bad of a guy.
♡ Intelligence - Ragna's not the sharpest tool in the shed at times. He's not all that dumb, he can get his head around a lot of things and can be fairly smart at times, but his main response to things is generally to brute force his way through if he thinks he can, and this can land him in some really hot water.
history
Prior to Ragna's existence, the world had been a bastion of magic and science; the two existed in harmony. However, on the turn of the 22nd Century (2100 A.D.), a huge, eight-headed monster made of a toxic, corrosive substance called "seithr" appeared in Japan. This creature raged on, attacking and killing with no rhyme or reason, killing everything it could for the sake of killing alone. The Black Beast was unbeatable - it could not be touched, let alone damaged by any non-magical means humankind had at their disposal. It made its way around the world, killing and killing, with mankind using nuclear weapons in a desperate attempt to destroy it. It didn't work, and with the small number of mages and people able to use magic in the world, there weren't enough to be able to kill the monster.
In 2107 A.D., a hero appeared. This hero was simply named "Bloodedge". Bloodedge took the fight to the Black Beast, leaving behind a coat and a sword - that would later be inherited by Ragna along with the name "Bloodedge" - and managed to stun the Black Beast, keeping it inactive for an entire year at the cost of his own life. This year was not in vain, either; during this year, six heroes appeared and taught the gifts of magic to mankind. These heroes consisted of Hakumen, a white armour-wearing warrior shrouded in mystery; Jubei, an incredibly powerful beastkin cat; Nine, one of the ten strongest mages in the world; Valkenhayn, a werewolf with incredible power; Trinity, a potent alchemist; and finally Yuuki Terumi, an evil man brainwashed by Nine with incredible levels of cunning and power. Mankind alone could not grasp magic and was unable to use it in its base form, however, which led to the creation of Ars Magus, the manipulation of magic through the use of science. Ars Magus was not enough to damage the Black Beast, however. It had to be taken one step further, and ten heavily destructive Ars Armagus weapons were created, named "Nox Nyctores" weapons. These weapons turned the fight around, using the seithr that was constantly being left everywhere by the Black Beast as a fuel source. After another couple of years of fighting, in the year 2110 A.D., the Black Beast was finally felled with the power of the Six Heroes. However, it left its permanent impact on the world by killing over half the population of the human race and rendering around 80% of the world uninhabitable due to the intense levels of toxic seithr in the air. It was possible to move through the world on foot by moving through areas with low seithr concentrations, but you couldn't stay there for long. As a result, humankind had to resort to living on mountaintops to avoid it, and created cities that became known as Hierarchical Cities by the dominant force in the world, the Novus Orbis Librarium (NOL). The NOL had been created in the war against the Black Beast (known as the First War of Ars Magus) by Yuuki Terumi as well as another organisation called "Sector Seven" (who, unlike the NOL, mainly focused on science), and the NOL quickly moved in to claim all "grimoires" (the primary things used by people in order to use Ars Magus), claiming that it was to prevent misuse.
This sparked fear and worry in the world as the NOL limited who was able to use Ars Magus, and the NOL slowly took over the world, leading each Hierarchical City with a branch of the NOL at the very top of each mountain that had a city on it. Inside the mountains beneath each branch lay what is known as a Cauldron, a strange portal created with Ars Magus that let mankind study the place where multiple timelines intersect, brimming with seithr, known as the Boundary. They researched this in secret, creating more artificial weapons of Ars Magus on the level of Nox Nyctores, known as the Murakumo Units. Eventually, the dictatorship of the NOL caused the Ikaruga Civil War, where a group of people known as the Ikaruga Union actively rebelled against the NOL's rule, with each side using Ars Magus to battle each other, marking the first time that humankind had ever used Ars Magus against each other. In the end, the Ikaruga Union was all but destroyed and this act of rebellion caused the NOL to change their policy, resulting in an immediate death sentence for anyone that ever dared rebel against their dictatorship.
Fast forward around 70-80 years, and Ragna's story begins.
When he was young, Ragna was confined in a laboratory alongside his brother Jin and his sister Saya for unknown reasons. Exactly how long they were in the lab is unclear, but they were broken out of the lab by one of the six heroes, Jubei. Jubei had them sent to a Church to be raised by the sister that acted as their guardian and surrogate mother, Celica Mercury. However, while he was growing up, tragedy struck. The ghost of Yuuki Terumi, having been sealed deep in the Boundary for a long, long time, was released by Takamagahara - an observant man-made (created before the Beast struck) "god" that had one purpose, and that was to prevent the abrupt end of the world through the manipulation of the world and observing of timelines. Takamagahara released Terumi in order to begin "Doomsday", and to artificially bring the world to an end in order to create an entirely new one of their own choosing.
Terumi appeared at the Church one day as a green ghost with a nightmarish grin and possessed Ragna's brother Jin Kisaragi. He used Jin to murder Celica Mercury, and then cut Ragna's arm off in a twisted display of evil, knocking Ragna out and leaving Jin to run away. Terumi kidnapped Saya and burned the Church to the ground, flipping both Ragna and Jin's entire lives around in a single day.
While Ragna was lying there, he was bleeding out and dying. At that moment, a vampire by the name of Rachel Alucard appeared by him, having been watching; she cast a spell on him and bit him at that moment, draining his hair of colour and turning him into a half-vampire, buying him precious time. During this time, she touched the Azure Grimoire that she had in her possession; a feared Ars Armagus tool of unimaginable power that drew on the power of darkness, it was quickly affixed to Ragna's body and took the form of a fake right arm. Rachel then left, having saved Ragna's life.
Ragna was found once more by Jubei, who took him in and began to train him in the ways of cooking and fighting, also training him to use his newfound power inside his right arm. While he was training Ragna to use his dark power, he made a point of making sure that Ragna knew that the power of the Azure Grimoire was not something to be overused; it was not his power to wield, and thus should only be wielded when it absolutely had to be wielded.
Many years later, Ragna's training was complete. He opted to set off on his journey, but not before Jubei gave him two things; the coat and sword (Blood-Scythe being the name of the sword, as it can transform into a scythe) of the hero, Bloodedge. Bloodedge was not famous in the way that the Six Heroes were, and few knew of him, but Ragna took up the name in his honour, becoming Ragna the Bloodedge.
With an inbuilt hatred of the Novus Orbis Librarium and their corrupt dictatorship, Ragna set out to rebel and free the world from its iron grip. He travelled from city to city, and at each city he would viciously and destructively assault the NOL base at the top of the city itself. He would travel through the bases, at the very least hospitalising every single NOL member that he found, and would descend to the Cauldron inside each mountain, destroying it as well as the Murakumo Units deep inside each Cauldron every time.
In doing this, Ragna amassed the largest bounty ever recorded, with the price of a small country being placed on his head due to his actions.
After destroying the NOL Branch in the 9th Hierarchical City of Akitsu-Kō, Ragna was met by Rachel Alucard. She motioned northwest, and informed him that his next target should be the 13th Hierarchical City of Kagutsuchi. Listening to her, he headed in that direction, his visit being around the turn of the Century; around 2200 A.D..
In the first timeline, the very important being called Noel Vermillion did not exist. In this timeline, Ragna headed to Kagutsuchi. He did the usual thing he did there, heading down to the Cauldron to destroy it. When he arrived, however, he was stopped cold by Jin Kisaragi, his brother. After running away from the Church, Jin had been taken in by the prestigious Kisaragi family and was now a high-ranking NOL officer; he had abandoned his post to seek out his brother with an insane bloodlust. Growing immediately incredibly angry, Ragna fought with Jin and easily defeated him, blaming him for what happened at the Church as he had only really seen Jin and though he had heard Terumi's voice, he assumed it was Jin as it was Jin's figure that had attacked him. As he won against Jin, the two were interrupted by Jin's secretary in this timeline, Tsubaki Yayoi. Ragna waved her away as she wasn't strong enough to take on Ragna, but as he did so the Cauldron opened before them. Kagutsuchi's Murakumo Unit, Nu-13, descended before them. Ragna fought with Nu, but unlike with Jin, he struggled and was defeated by her. Jin challenged Nu despite his injuries, and Nu flung a blade at him; Tsubaki took the hit, saving his life but dying herself. Nu then pulled Ragna into the Cauldron despite his protesting screams, and pulled him into the Boundary. Having been in love with Tsubaki, Jin was immediately enraged, and leapt into the Boundary after Nu, not willing to lose his brother and his secretary to someone that just got away.
The Boundary being the place where timelines connect, Jin was flung back in time to a different, similar timeline. In this timeline, he was approached by Rachel Alucard, who offered him the chance to become a real hero with a white suit of armour; he donned this suit, and became Hakumen, throwing his old identity aside. Ragna and Nu appeared in the same timeline, having merged together in the Boundary. Their powers had merged and peaked, and as a result the Black Beast was formed. This led to everything in history falling into place.
The differing part of the new timeline to the old one was the existence of a girl called Noel Vermillion. Noel was a unique Murakumo Unit, Mu-12. In the first timeline, she was destroyed when she was formed by one of the Nox Nyctores, an aerial assault weapon that could fire a laser strong enough to level cities once every four years - Gigant: Take-Mikazuchi. In this timeline, Noel survived the blast, but had absolutely no memory of the instance. She was adopted by a caring family when found, and eventually she drafted into the Novus Orbis Librarium as a soldier with an obscenely high Ars Magus aptitude. She worked incredibly hard, and ended up becoming Jin Kisaragi's secretary instead of Tsubaki - Tsubaki instead became a member of the Zero Squadron, a group of unofficial Librarium "trash-collectors" that stomp out any potential rebels and problems for the Librarium.
In this timeline, Ragna made his way to Kagutsuchi as he did in the old one. He battled through the library, meeting Jin much sooner than he did last time and winning again, and he descended to the Cauldron. On his way, however... he was met with Hakumen of the Six Heroes, who battled him for a lengthy while. Unable to win against Hakumen due to how strong Hakumen was, Ragna was forced to activate his Azure Grimoire. He did battle with Hakumen once more, and after a lengthy struggle came out on top. At this point, the Cauldron opened and Nu-13 emerged; she fought Ragna similarly to in the previous timeline, and once again she came out victorious. As Ragna was being lifted into the Cauldron by Nu, however, Noel arrived on the scene. She had arrived in Kagutsuchi with a Captain of the Intelligence Department, Hazama, in order to call Jin Kisaragi back to his post. In a split-second decision, Noel reached out to Ragna. Using the last of his strength, he reached out and grabbed Noel's hand, and she pulled him back to safety as Nu burned and fell into the Boundary by herself.
Saved by Noel, Ragna only got up when he heard a familiar voice. It was Hazama, congratulating the two for finally breaking out of the cycle - as it turns out, the cycle of Ragna being pulled into the Boundary with Nu had been something that had been stuck in a timeloop created by Takamagahara. Ragna instantly went into a state of angry shock, recognising the voice from a long time ago; it was Yuuki Terumi's voice. As a ghost, Terumi had had an artificial body built for him named Hazama, and he had operated under this guise for years. He admitted to what he did at the Church, and laughed at Ragna.
Having plans of his own, Terumi fled after making remarks at Ragna to rile him up. Ragna took a while to calm down afterward, but realised his mistake in blaming Jin and dug out of the collapsed NOL Branch with Noel beside him. They quickly got into an argument due to Ragna's dismissal of her, and she fled, reminding him that the next time they met she would have to arrest him.
After Noel left, Ragna was attacked by a vigilante, Carl Clover. He defeated Carl, but Carl was wielding a Nox Nyctores, which landed a hit on Ragna that left him heavily injured. Ragna got away and collapsed, waking up in the bowels of Kagutsuchi, being looked after by the "Kaka Clan", a clan of bipedal cat beastkin that lived in peace down there. After spending a few days in the village recovering and becoming friends with a dimwitted wannabe vigilante cat that doesn't care much for money and just wants food, Taokaka, Ragna decided he was well enough to venture out and left the village.
After leaving the village, Ragna has a run-in with a magical girl, Platinum the Trinity, who threatened to shout to everyone that he was Ragna the Bloodedge unless he bought her some food. He begrudingly did so, ate with her, and after she labelled him as a paedophile for pretty much no reason other than because he was so easy to tease, he left her and headed away. On his way away, he was interrupted by a startling sight; a Murakumo Unit teleporting in front of him. It activated, and a voice came out of it. The voice was that of a Sector Seven scientist, Kokonoe, who was the daughter of Nine and Jubei. She remarked that the teleportation process had failed, and told the Murakumo Unit, whose name was Lambda, to fight Ragna anyway to test its combat abilities. Ragna had no choice, and was forced to fight Lambda to protect himself. He defeated Lambda fairly easily, and Kokonoe teleported Lambda away, having revived Lambda as an attempt to harness the power of the NOL's Murakumo Units for Sector Seven, who saw the NOL as their main adversaries. Before teleporting Lambda away, Kokonoe told Ragna that he must not fight Hazama, as he couldn't beat him, bringing up Noel Vermillion.
On his way around Kagutsuchi, Ragna encounters Rachel. Rachel informs him of where Noel Vermillion is as she had been kidnapped by Hazama, but firmly tells him that he must not fight Hazama, as he cannot beat Hazama.
Ragna headed up in the direction Rachel sent him, and encountered Jin again; Jin challenged him, and Ragna won against the severely injured Jin ridiculously easily. Jin called out to his brother, saying that he should not fight Hazama, as he wouldn't win.
Ragna proceeded to ignore everything, heading to the very top of the NOL branch to fight Hazama. Hazama had taken Noel and had begun smelting her into what she was first created to be; the strongest Murakumo Unit, Mu-12, her being the "Sword of the Godslayer" and the only Murakumo to be able to actively damage one of the gods of this world hidden in the depths of the Boundary, the Master Unit Amaterasu.
Ragna and Hazama fought, with Hazama clearly being the stronger person. Ragna tried to activate his Azure Grimoire, but to his surprise, Hazama called out the same activation code that he did; Hazama himself had a Grimoire, and used it to lock Ragna's one, revealing that Hazama was not only the creator of the Azure Grimoire, but also that Ragna's was nothing more than an imitation. The two continued to fight, with Hazama defeating Ragna easily.
Turning to the Cauldron, Hazama opened up his arms, and from the Cauldron came Mu-12, Noel Vermillion's true form. It was at this point that the timeline stopped; it was in another loop, created once again by Takamagahara. However, as Ragna prepared to fight Mu-12 as well as Hazama, he noticed the shadows turning and forming shapes all around him. Confused and injured, he did battle with them as best he could with the tools he had at his disposal, but quickly realised he couldn't damage the things. Assuming that this was a result of his failure to save Noel, he sprinted out of there, taking a while to even realise his surroundings were not similar to that of Kagutsuchi even slightly.
Abilities
• Trained Fighter - Having been trained by one of the strongest beings in the world, he's an incredibly adept fighter, definitely able to hold his own.
• Life Siphon - His drive attacks, or all attacks that use seithr and the Azure Grimoire, deal damage and heal Ragna slightly.
• Distortion Drives - Ragna has a number of super moves that distort the very world around him as he uses them. These include "Carnage Scissors", where he brings his sword around and slices his opponent with scissors of seithr, and "Devoured By Darkness", where the hand that is the Azure Grimoire grabs his opponent as a giant claw of darkness, and the opponent is continually shredded by tendrils of seithr energy.
• Overdrive/BlazBlue/Azure Grimoire - By activating Overdrive, Ragna can activate and unleash the power of his BlazBlue. This isn't something he will do often, and he will never do it lightly - only in a serious fight where he can't win without it, or against someone he has such a grudge against that he wants dead at all costs. This makes him a destructive powerhouse, powering up all of his abilities significantly and increasing the effect of his life siphon abilities.
• Astral Heat: Black Onslaught (Move Example) - Ragna's ultimate move is his Astral Heat, Black Onslaught. This is a move where after a stun hit with his sword Blood-Scythe, Ragna extends it to its scythe form and strikes the opponent relentlessly and mercilessly with it, pulling back and absorbing life force from the opponent before swinging with incredible dark power, disintegrating whoever is unlucky enough to be on the opposite end of it. It's an insta-kill move, but in-game it's only usable when the opponent is below around 35% HP and you have full heat. That doesn't mean much here, but what I'm saying is, don't expect to see this move with any degree of frequency, if at all. Even if I were to use it, it would have to be something I discussed with the RPer of whoever I was fighting. Ragna doesn't like to use his BlazBlue like it anyway.
Weaknesses
○ Ghosts - Ragna is petrified of ghosts. If there are any ghosts around, don't expect him to be of much help. He'll be in the corner, shrieking and watching out for ghostly apparitions.
○ Projectiles - He has none. Ragna is a straight-up rushdown character, in your face. He can jump really high and move pretty damn fast, but if you can reliably remain at distance, you can probably take him without much risk.
○ Judgement - Ragna often lets his anger and emotions cloud his judgement. He's far from a saint, and can make some pretty stupid decisions based on how he feels, both in and out of battle.
○ Overload - The thing with Ragna is that while he's very strong, he has to be careful with his abilities. As Jubei and Rachel have both told him, the power of the Azure Grimoire is not to be mistaken as your own, and Ragna's BlazBlue in particular houses the violent, destructive tendencies of the Black Beast. What this means is that if he overuses his power and does this too much, he risks being overcome by his power. If he is overcome, he will transform into the Black Beast, a monster made of seithr and darkness only stoppable with magic and magic-related abilities.
○ Bloodlust - Regardless of him being a nice guy deep down, Ragna can get caught up in the heat of battle and can really enjoy getting pretty murderous. He doesn't do this very often at all, and it's possible he may never get like it again, but he has done it in the past.
